Solent Transport EOI to Future Mobility Zones Fund

on Friday, 24 May 2019.

The Department for Transport’s Future Mobility Zones Fund is a £70m fund which seeks to support local leaders and industry to trial new mobility services, modes and models through the creation of up to 4 future mobility zones.

City regions currently shortlisted for the Transforming Cities fund – including both Portsmouth City Region and Southampton City Region-are eligible to submit expressions of interest to this fund.

A joint Portsmouth City Region and Southampton City Region expression of interest has been prepared by Solent Transport, and was submitted on 24th May 2019 to the DfT.

The Solent Mobility Zone programme proposes to address local challenges such as high levels of car usage and the impacts of freight movement within Solent’s urban areas through delivering a series of complementary projects within two key themes:

  • Theme 1: Personal Mobility: providing new modes of travel, and developing new, complimentary means of planning and paying for journeys - strengthening and deepening the use of sustainable modes beyond what both cities’ TCF proposals would deliver.   Theme 1 project proposals include development of Mobility as a Service trials at University of Southampton and University of Portsmouth, developing and evolving Solent Go, and development of Demand Responsive Transit and Bike/ e-bike share schemes.
  • Theme 2: Sustainable Urban Logistics: developing innovative approaches to address impacts of freight & logistics in urban environments. Working closely with locally based research specialists in this field, our proposals include projects to widen use of existing delivery consolidation services in Solent; to trial low/ zero emission “last mile” deliveries; and to trial the UK’s first drone delivery network, moving medical products between hospitals on the mainland and the Isle of Wight
