Receive £50 per month for six months to spend on public and shared transport, delivered through a physical prepaid debit card!

The prepaid card will be posted to your home address for you to use as you would do any debit card to purchase public transport options in your local area.

Applications will close on Friday 17th July 2026. We do have limited spaces, so Solent Transport reserves the right to close applications early where we are oversubscribed. Please note that places are limited to one applicant per household. For more information on the trial, please see the information below.

What is the trial, and how does it work?

Participants will receive, in the post, a prepaid card that will be limited for use so that it can only be used, and accepted, by public transport offerings including:

  • Bus tickets
  • Rail tickets
  • Ferry tickets
  • Shared micromobility (e-bike or e-scooter) hire

Participants will receive £50 per month (every month for six months) to spend on transport services in the local area. You will be able to use the card like a normal debit card and make purchases as you would do any normal purchase, or you can use the card online. Please note that you cannot use the card to make any cash withdrawals, but the card can be used at an ATM machine to check your balance.

When applying, participants agree to complete an online survey at the end of the trial so that we can understand the impact of Mobility Credits on the use and perceptions of public transport. They also agree to the terms laid out in the Terms and Conditions:

How do the prepaid cards work?

Once your application to join the scheme has been approved your prepaid card will be sent to your residential address in the post. £50 will be added to your prepaid card at the start of every month until the mobility credit prepaid card scheme ends.

The prepaid card is not a credit card and will have no loan or advance credit facility. You will only be able to make payments from the available balance on the card and these are restricted to the purchase of public and shared transport options.

For every month of your trial the mobility credit prepaid card will have £50 added to the balance. Any unspent credit from the previous month will remain on the card and will automatically be added to the balance after the new £50 is added each month (e.g. if you only spend £43.00 in month one, the remaining £7.00 will be added to the £50 in month two, giving you £57.00 to spend). At the end of the trial any remaining credit will be removed.

The mobility credit prepaid card is designed so that they cannot enter a negative balance. A standard transaction will automatically decline if you do not have sufficient funds; this is because the cards are not set up with any overdraft facility, and any authorisation request on a card without funds, or already in a negative balance, will be declined. For example, if purchasing a train ticket for £12, and there is only £8 remaining on your prepaid card, the payment will be rejected.

Why are we running it?

Solent Transport wants to understand how mobility credits affect the perception and use of public transport, and the impact on quality of life.
