The Aim

Breeze was the first multi-city Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) app in the UK. It offered a new way for people to plan, book and pay for journeys across many transport services around the Solent area. This included buses, trains, ferries, e-scooters, e-bikes, walking routes, car clubs and the hovercraft.

Breeze ran as a five year trial, exploring the impact of a transport app on users’ journey planning and transport choices. Does better information encourage them to make fewer private car trips? Will users increase their use of public transport and active travel modes? Can the platform be used to influence travel behaviour?

Breeze was designed to make transport choices clearer, quicker and easier. Unlike other apps, it provided all the information in one place, helping customers understand how best to travel from one location to another. From timetables to tickets, from unlocking a rental e-scooter, to booking a ferry ticket or tracking the live location of a bus – it provided the most accurate and reliable information at your fingertips.

Since the start of Breeze’s development journey in 2021, Solent Transport worked closely with academic partners at the University of Portsmouth and the University of Southampton to design and improve the app to ensure it was intuitive, accessible and effective.
