The Aim

Using ringfenced grant funding from the Department for Transport, the Mobility Credits project aimed to provide those from low-income backgrounds, many of whom were in transport poverty, the chance to access local services, leisure facilities, education and employment.

The project offered travel credits through the Breeze app for a limited period of time. The credits were offered to eligible residents aged under 30, meeting carefully selected low-income criteria. They could be used to buy tickets for all the types of transport available in Breeze.

The aim was to research what effect offering Mobility Credits had on how likely people were to use public transport, along with the impact on other outcomes such as helping them to access work, education and essential services. Uniquely, this was the only scheme known to be delivering a trial solely through a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) app.
